I think that a religion can and should practice psychotherapy. It is not religion that will do evil, but if the professional psychotherapist is unethical, it is an evil to society and to their customers. We must not forget that the world is composed mostly by poor people who do not have access to decent basic medical care, much less a psychotherapist to hear about your anxieties. In this sense, many pastors, rabbis and other religious play a good role of counselor, okay not that many of them we use scientific methods, but all agree that most people just need an ear to vent. A sincere friend is a psychologist and the results are most satisfactory.
